Propane Autogas FAQs

Q. Who uses propane autogas?

A. Lots of folks! Propane is the number one alternative fuel for the automotive sector, powering more than 8 million vehicles in more than 38 countries.

Q. What kind of effect will propane autogas have on my vehicle?

A. A very positive one! Many propane vehicle fleets have reported 2 to 3 years longer service life and extended intervals between required maintenances compared to gasoline vehicles.

Q. What is the driving range of the vehicle?

A. It depends on the vehicle and tank size.  However, most vehicles will be able to travel anywhere from 300 to 400 miles on one tank.  Dual fuel systems can travel twice as far as once the propane tank is empty the vehicle will switch to utilizing gasoline.

Q. Will my propane powered vehicle get the same MPG?

A. Propane burns at a higher octane level than gasoline.  Therefore, you should expect a 10% loss in MPG.

Q. Will I save anything by converting to propane autogas?

A. Yes! You'll lower your operating costs and your emissions. Propane vehicles have the longest driving range of any alternative fuel. And, propane exhaust creates 60 to 70 percent less smog-producing hydrocarbons than gasoline.

Q. How do I purchase or convert a vehicle to propane?

A. OEM products can be purchased direct from the manufacturer.  Phillips Energy uses a certified mechanic for conversions to bi-fuel systems.  We can also offer training for fleet mechanics on conversions and maintenance through Alliance Autogas.

Q. What are the cost differences between propane Autogas fuel and conventional fuel vehicles?

A. Bi Fuel systems average between $5,000 and $6500 for the conversion system and tank.  OEM dedicated propane vehicles cost approximately $10,000 more than conventionally fueled vehicles.

Q. How do I refuel my propane Autogas vehicle?

A. Most fleet customers are eligible for loaned refueling infrastructure supplied by the propane company.  Private vehicles can refuel at various sits throughout the country that have Autogas refueling stations.  Click here to locate a refueling site on your route.
