At Phillips Energy, we treasure the relationships we’ve built with the customers in our community. We’ve grown over the last 75 years and so has our commitment to Gloucester, Mathews, New Kent and the rest of the communities in Upper Tidewater we serve.

We asked a few local businesses to share their favorite recipes. This one comes from I Don’t Know Bar and Grill.

Monte Cristo Sandwich

Ingredients for beer batter

1 cup flour
½ tbsp baking powder
1 tsp kosher salt
pinch of cayenne
pinch of Old Bay

1 cup beer

Ingredients for sandwich

2 slices sourdough bread
3 oz honey-roasted ham
3 oz roasted turkey
2 slices cheddar cheese

Powdered sugar

Your favorite preserves/jam (optional)

Whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cayenne and Old Bay in a mixing bowl. Slowly add the beer while whisking. Reserve a small portion of the flour for coating the sandwich.

Assemble sandwich and wrap with plastic wrap. Squeeze together and let it sit for 10 minutes.

Coat with flour and cover with beer batter. Fry the battered sandwich about 5 minutes on each side until golden brown.

Serve with your preserves or jam. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and enjoy!
