Even though this winter has been milder than usual, don’t get left out in the cold when temperatures drop in future months or years!

If there’s one thing we want out of a heating system, it’s to keep us warm. But, if your home has an older system and isn’t getting the job done, it might be time to consider your options.

So, where do you start?

There are several things to consider when deciding on a home heating system.

In particular, is which kind of fuel will provide the most efficient, cost-effective and comfortable heat.

While many people have historically relied upon electricity, natural gas, oil and wood to run their heating systems, there is another option: propane.

Also known as liquefied petroleum gas, propane is a byproduct of natural gas processing. It is nontoxic, odorless and the majority of it is produced in the United States. Propane can be used to power appliances, vehicles, heavy equipment, water heaters and whole-home heat systems.

Considered an alternative energy, propane is readily available across the United States, and its popularity is picking up steam.

So, what are some of the advantages of a propane heating system?

Comfort: A propane furnace or boiler will heat air to a higher initial temperature, getting to your desired temperature faster, and maintaining it easier. And it will do it efficiently

Cost: Compared to conventional fuels and other alternative energy sources, propane generally costs less even as fuel prices fluctuate.

Efficiency: High-efficiency propane furnaces are rated anywhere between 90 and 98 percent efficient. This increased efficiency can mean substantial savings in your annual energy bill.

Clean: Propane is an approved clean fuel listed in the 1990 Clean Air Act. Using propane reduces the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and air pollutants like carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide.

American-made: Propane production keeps quality jobs in our country. As of 2012, more than 145,000 workers across the U.S. are employed in the propane trade, wholesale, and sales.

Abundance: The U.S. produces more than enough propane to meet demand. In fact, the U.S. is propane’s leading producer.
